Rosebank Primary School in Burley has officially opened its new sensory garden, a specially designed outdoor space that will support the wellbeing, communication and development of children across the school.
The project has been made possible thanks to a generous grant from Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, and was officially opened by former England and Leeds Rhinos rugby league star Jamie Jones-Buchanan MBE, alongside the Lord Mayor of Leeds.
The Sensory Garden has been created to provide a calm, engaging environment where children can regulate their emotions, develop their senses, build communication skills and enjoy learning in a different way.
Headteacher Alice Smith said: “It will be particularly beneficial for pupils with additional needs, including autism and sensory processing differences, while also offering a peaceful space for all children to enjoy.
” The school is committed to ensuring every child feels they belong, can thrive and has the opportunity to succeed. The new Sensory Garden reflects this commitment by providing an inclusive space that supports children’s emotional wellbeing alongside their learning.”
The creative inspiration behind the sensory garden was invented by Creative sound sculpture designer & interactive music facilitator, Ben Gates.
Ben, who runs the Orchestra of Objects, specialises in crafting unique instruments based on a wide range of idiophones designed to encourage accessible, engaging and enjoyable music making experiences for participants of all ages.
The opening celebration brought together families, governors, community partners and special guests to celebrate the power of working together to create opportunities for children.
