A 20-metre mobile phone mast could be installed on a west Leeds street, if plans are agreed with the council.
Telecoms companies EE and Hutchison 3G said fitting the equipment on Ledgard Way would help maintain 5G network coverage in the area.
A planning report said the installation would replace an existing mast on a nearby building which is set to be turned into housing.
It said: “It is imperative to consider that this proposal is to replace an existing installation and is not new additional installation.
“The site is required to provide new 5G coverage for EE Ltd in order to improve coverage in the Armley area of Leeds.”
The new location was near a bus stop and close to trees, which would partially screen the mast from view.
The report said a 20-metre mast was needed to avoid radio signals being obstructed by surrounding buildings.
It said: “The height of the proposed street works pole is therefore necessary for this installation to enable the continued and improved coverage and capacity to be delivered to residents and businesses in the Armley area.”
Alternatives sites had been deemed unsuitable for the installation, the report said.
Leeds City Council is considering a planning application which is out for consultation until June 23. The plans can be viewed here.
