Leeds West and Pudsey MP Rachel Reeves axed as Chancellor: “It’s been the privilege of my life” – updated

Leeds West and Pudsey MP Rachel Reeves has issued a statement after being replaced as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

New Prime Minister Andy Burnham stepped into Number 10 Downing Street for the first time today after Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation as Labour Party leader. Mr Burnham is reshaping his cabinet, and took the decision to remove Ms Reeves, 47, as Chancellor.

It’s reported by the BBC and Sky that Ms Reeves was offered a Cabinet position, but declined.

In a statement on social media platform X, Ms Reeves has wished her successor ‘the best of luck’.

She said: “It has been the privilege of my life to serve as the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

“The economy today is stronger, fairer and more resilient because of the choices we have taken as a Labour Government over the past two years.

“Stability restored, investment delivered and reform to our economy under way. I said when I was appointed Chancellor that I would judge my time in office if the lives ordinary working class people have been improved. I’m proud to say that they have.

“And to every young woman and girl let my time in office show there should be no ceilings on your ambitions, your hopes or your dreams.

“I wish the very best of luck to my successor, Andy and his cabinet. You have my full support, and I will continue to play my part in helping this Labour government deliver the change the country needs.”

Mr Burnham said it was a time for “reflection and new resolution,” adding: “Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again.”

John Healey MP has taken Ms Reeves’ position as Chancellor.

    • There are currently 4 Cabinet Ministers from Yorkshire appointed by Andy Burnham – in fact Nick Robinson on R4 Today has literally just highlighted this fact on the basis that we are overrepresented.

      • I notice your “spin” on the appointments, and the fact that you stood for Labour in the last election in Pudsey and failed miserably. I would like you to comment on the recent appointments. 1) The fact that Rayner had been appointed Housing Minister when she had been found to be fiddling her housing benefits to make money out of it. Surely she would have known the ramifications of it? 2) Louise Hague has been brought back into the cabinet after being sacked for fraud in which she reported a mobile phone stolen which was subsequently found in her possession . Whilst I appreciate that there are other indiscretions that can be attributed to previous Governments, we are talking about the here and now. I would welcome your comments on the honesty of the present of the incumbents who are taking us into the future of the Country. Because I honestly believe that we all deserve better.

        • It might be better if you simply acknowledged that you were completely wrong – Andy Burnham appointed 4 Cabinet Minsters from Yorkshire so there is no Manchester bias and our County is very well represented at the top table. Have a nice day.

          • You replied to my post, stating that “I was completely wrong”. Where in my post did I state that there was any Manchester bias? I made comments about the integrity of the current appointments, and, I think, measured the comments by saying that understood that other parties had candidates who had erred, but that we were living in the here and now, making comments about the current government, which, in a democratic society is a persons right? I NEVER made any comments, which I repeat again, about Manchester bias. Try reading my post again, and then, when you have understood it, make a proper and level comment, because, at the moment, I don’t think you are capable of that?
