Entries for Calverley Show’s children’s art section have been boosted thanks to a Drop In and Make session in the village’s newly-opened library.
Show Secretary Noel Akers said the new children’s library was so popular that he decided to ask if they would team up with the show to encourage more entries from children. The library not only said yes, but also donated books as prizes.
The two children’s classes in the show supported by Leeds Libraries are drawing ‘My favourite book character’ and a colouring-in sheet.
“We were amazed at the number of children who came to the library session, they were so enthusiastic – and very talented. Already we have more entries than we’ve ever had, and they are still coming in,” said Noel. “The judge is going to have a difficult job!’
There are four other classes for children, including collage and photography. Entries for the show on Saturday 15 August can be submitted on Friday evening and Saturday morning, full details are on the website. The artwork will be on display in Methodist Chapel and afterwards at the library,
Noel said they were hoping for a record number of entries at the 105th Calverley Show, whether it was the traditional flowers, fruit and vegetables or baking, handicrafts, art or photography.
“Anyone can enter – and anyone can win, every year we have someone who enters for the first time – and they go away with a prize,” he said.
This year will see the return of Drighlington Brass Band and stalls selling jewellery, wooden items, crochet gifts, decoupage bottles and candles, plants and goodies grown in the allotments. The Dogs Trust is also bringing its stall and there will be Thai food, refreshments and a tombola.
Doors open at 1pm, entry is pay as you feel.
