A Kirkstall pub could open until 3am for England’s first three games at the FIFA World Cup next month – but faces concerns over noise.
Councillors on the licensing sub committee will next week consider Kirkstall Bridge Inn’s application for temporary event notices to open 5pm-3am for the opening three
fixtures on 17 June, 23 June, and 27 June.
They also requested to serve alcohol and food in the private car park during these hours,
while showing the football on an outdoor screen. A maximum of 450 people, including staff, would be in attendance.
Current licensing allows the sale of alcohol up and indoor entertainment until 2am.
England’s opening two games, against Croatia and Ghana, will kick off at 9pm UK time, while their final group stage fixture, against Panama, will begin at 10pm.
An objection from the council’s Environmental Health Services said the pub was in close proximity to residential properties on Leeds and Bradford Road and Broad Lane.
It said: “Therefore, it is my view that the external events proposed and the late-night opening hours over two weeknights and one weekend are extremely likely to cause noise nuisance to nearby residents from loud music, loud sports noise, and noise from loud football fans being outside until 3am.
“This department therefore has concerns that the licensing objective for the prevention of
public nuisance will not be met should this proposed event take place and thus is formally
serving notice that we object.”
The application will be considered by councillors on the the Licensing Sub-Committee in Leeds Civic Hall, which has a provisional date of Tuesday, 26 May (10am). The reports and documents can be read in full here.
