Plans to transform the former Rupyal Restaurant in Stanningley into a place of worship have been submitted to Leeds City Council.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) – House of Praise Leeds want to use the former restaurant building, at 103 Town Street, to hold its services and activities.
Planning documents say the application relates solely to the proposed use of the building by the church congregation and does not involve any extension, enlargement, alteration to the building envelope or any material changes to the external appearance of the property.
A design statement submitted with the application states: “The proposed use as a place of worship would operate during relatively limited periods throughout the week, principally on Sundays and one evening per week, together with occasional special services.
“The proposed congregation comprises approximately 40 worshippers and the church actively promotes the use of its dedicated minibus service, public transport and car sharing arrangements.”
It concludes the application “represents an appropriate, sustainable and beneficial form of development”.
The plans can be viewed in full here.
Previous plans to turn the building into a 16-bed house in multiple occupation were withdrawn in 2024.
Earlier this year, Christian organisation Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Power Connections successfully applied for planning permission to move into a former curtain and blinds shop on Tong Road in Wortley.
