Horsforth Town Council Chair Cllr Simon Dowling and town and city Cllr Emmie Bromley (Lab, Horsforth) visited Broadgate Primary School in Horsforth this week as part of year five pupils’ Leeds Children’s Mayor project.
As part of the project the pupils are preparing their manifestos and highlighting the issues they feel passionate about and would like to see highlighted in the community.
Cllr Dowling thanked staff and pupils for making them so welcome and said they were looking forward to following the pupils journey and seeing the manifestos when they were finished:
“We had great discussions with Year 5 pupils at Broadgate Primary School about democracy, leadership and making a difference in their community.
“Young people have such great ideas, and it is important that their voices are heard. As councillors, we will also be looking through the manifestos to see what ideas and suggestions we can try to implement here in Horsforth.”
Cllr Bromley added: “The competition for Leeds Children’s Mayor isn’t a possibility in every city but part of what makes Leeds a Child Friendly City. This opportunity encourages young people to use their voice, inspire change and get insight into how local government runs.
“It was wonderful to hear all the questions for me from the children at Broadgate Primary and I am certain there will be some fantastic manifestos this year.”
Sarah Qualtrough, Headteacher of Broadgate Primary School, said: “We are delighted that our Year 5 pupils have had the opportunity to learn first-hand about democracy and the electoral process. Experiences like this help children understand that their voices matter and encourage them to become active, responsible citizens within their local community.
“We are grateful to Chair of Horsforth Town Council Councillor Dowling and Councillor Bromley for giving their time to inspire our pupils.”
Pupils in year five across Leeds can apply to become the next Leeds Children’s Mayor. After manifestos are submitted in June they are shortlisted to a final 12 in July. Under 18’s across the city can then vote for the next Children’s Mayor, who serves a year’s term, with the winner being announced in October.
