Drop-in exhibition gives people say on new Armley mental health unit

Plans for a 22-bed in-patient mental health unit on the St Mary’s Hospital site in Armley have been submitted – and people are being invited to have their say at a special event.

The NHS is seeking planning permission from Leeds City Council to build the in-patient unit, where children and young people can undergo treatment for serious mental health issues.

The unit includes six psychiatric intensive care rooms, 16 general en-suite bedrooms, an activity room, a school, family visiting rooms and courtyards.

It would also include a ‘Section 136 Suite’, where people detained under the Mental Health Act can be taken for an assessment.

Plans were drawn up after NHS England’s Specialist Commissioning Unit said there is ‘an urgent need’ for an in-patient unit that can provide mental health treatment to children and young people in West Yorkshire.

The finalised plans will also be on display in the classroom at Holly House in St Mary’s Hospital site, Green Hill Road, between 4pm and 7pm on Tuesday, July 16.

Architects, specialist staff and NHS managers will be on hand to answer questions from visitors, during the drop-in exhibition which is open to the public.

Proposals include the demolition of the existing Estates Post Room, Hawthorn House, Sycamore House, Memory Clinic and Records Building and the erection of a new part single/ part two storey building positioned toward the north of the existing St Mary’s Hospital site.

The plans can be viewed in full and commented upon here.
