Bramley: Community garden ‘haven’ restored thanks to green-fingered volunteers

Community gardeners in Bramley have celebrated restoring a community garden to its former glory at a special tea and cake celebration with councillors.

Volunteers from The Gardening Group, at Bramley Lawn Social Centre, has been working for several months to revamp the community garden.

As well as cutting back overgrown vegetation and weeding, the volunteers also took part in planting flowers, growing tomatoes and cucumbers, as well and herbs and vegetables. Many of the plants were raised from seed.

One of the group leaders, Bramley resident Arlene Pluskota, said: “I enjoy doing this because it gives me a sense of satisfaction to bring it back to life and the fact that all the people who come to Bramley Lawn can come and enjoy it.”

The group, made up off Bramley Elderly Action members, meet every Friday, 2-4pm, at Bramley Lawn and welcomes new members – no experience required, just enthusiasm.

The Gardening Group received just over £300 from MICE money donated by the three Bramley & Stanningley councillors, Tom Hinchcliffe, Adele Rae and Kevin Ritchie (all Labour). The money went towards buying plants, seeds, top soil and compost.

Posting on social media, the councillors said: “We were so pleased to visit Bramley Elderly Action‘s gardening group at Bramley Lawn. The work that the volunteers have put in to plant a variety of flowers, plants and vegetables is fantastic and has made the space much greener and brighter.

“We were more than happy to help to fund the group with equipment and seeds.”
