Boxer’s Farsley training camp leads to bout win

By James Bovington

West Leeds boxer Sam Duffy is delighted that his three-month training camp at Al Osta’s Farsley gym paid off with a decisive defeat of Stuart James.

Duffy was taking part in a local show organised by Leeds promoter and bare-knuckle boxer Scott McHugh.

“This sport is my life,” said Duffy, 21, who took up boxing along with his older brother Max following their mother’s death five years ago.

“Boxing has given us a focus. We recently opened Different Breed; that’s our own boxing gym in Shipley but Osta’s Gym is also my home. The training’s fantastic and I aim eventually to be a champion boxer.

“For now, I just want to box as often as I can. Credit to my opponent Stuart James for the three round war we fought with both of us relishing every second.”

McHugh said: “There were 17 bouts on our show allowing 34 fighters from across West Yorkshire the chance to showcase the skills they learn in training.

“They’re not professionals as such but are competent fighters committed to boxing and who through ticket sale commissions are building their own fanbase and winning the promotion’s high-quality belts. I was delighted to see Harvey Bedford and Sam Duffy, who train with me at Osta’s, win their bouts.”

Known as ‘The Mute’, McHugh, 33, is completing preparation camp for his bare-knuckle encounter with Leicester’s Liam Howell on the BKB show in Bolton on 5 July.

“I’ve lots of supporters travelling over,” he said. “They won’t be disappointed. I always put a show on and like Sam, Harvey and the others I live for this stuff.”
