Arts to Share: ‘Vital’ community resource needs support

By Helen Garrand

Since its founding in 1988, Arts to Share has been a beacon of inclusivity and creativity, offering tactile handling sessions that bring art to life for those who might otherwise struggle to engage with traditional exhibitions.

Now, the community group faces a pressing challenge: a need for more funding and members to sustain its invaluable work.

For decades, Arts to Share has organised events at different museum and art venues across Leeds, including Abbey House Museum, Armley Mills Industrial Museum and Horsforth Village Museum.

Each event enables people of all ages and abilities, especially those with visual impairments or mobility issues, to experience art in a uniquely hands-on way.

Curators provide interactive events where members can touch artefacts, smell and listen to audio descriptions. This fosters a deeper understanding and connection to culture and creativity.

Founder Susan Dales said: “The group brings together both sighted and visually impaired people in the shared experience of handling objects from museums.”

Attendee Janet Clarke added: “I love this group and feel well looked after. My hearing and sight are both dodgy, but the speakers try to make all see and hear well which makes me feel happy.”

Sarah Cowling describes the group as “amazing, friendly, interesting and provides both a relaxing and motivating environment”.

Maintaining these sessions requires resources, volunteers, and financial backing. With rising costs and growing demand, Arts to Share is calling for new members to join their efforts and for generous donors to contribute towards its future.

Whether you’re an artist, an educator, or simply someone who believes in the power of art to connect and inspire, your support could make all the difference.
