A great Christmas knit for Armley

A unique nativity display is now on view for shoppers in Armley.

Beautifully knitted characters from the christmas story are being put on daily display for viewing by passing pedestrians. 

The Nativity Display Table is adjacent to the front entrance doors of the Leeds City Mission (LCM) Compassion Centre in Mistress Lane.

Shepherds, sheep, wise men, camels, Mary, Joseph and the new born baby Jesus and manger have been carefully knitted by a retired pensioner.  The display has been loaned to the City Mission for the Christmas season.

Staff and volunteers at the City Mission have noted the absence of any Nativity display in the Armley shopping area and decided to take action. 

After acquiring the display, the knitted nativity characters from the christmas story are arranged and put out for public viewing in the model Bethlehem stable every day.  

LCM Development Worker Andy Dalton said that their premises were the last public building at the end of the Armley shopping area. Consequently there is a high volume of footfall as local residents pass on their way to the shops.

He said “Christmas these days is a rush for everyone and it is too easy to forget what it is actually all about.  We hope this little colourful Nativity Display will remind people of the christmas story and its relevance for today.”

The LCM Compassion Centre is located at the junction of Mistress Lane and Town Street in Armley. The display will be on view every day (except Wednesday) until Christmas Eve.

Leeds City Mission is one of the oldest charities in Leeds being in continuous existence since 1837. It runs a range of projects helping people living at the margins and struggling with life.
