Write Club: New creative writing group puts pen to paper in Armley

A new creative writing group will start in Armley next Monday. 

Write Club, run by professional poet and playwright Chris Singleton, in association with BARCA and Being You Leeds, is open to anyone over 16. The group, which is free of charge, will hold creative writing sessions open to all abilities, from those who have never picked up a pen to those who write every day. 

Chris, who is also artistic director of Brave Words theatre company and has more than 15 years’ experience of running workshops, told WLD: “Each session I set a theme and a few prompts, often based on other pieces of writing, and then there’s space to write new pieces of poetry, prose, dialogue, scripts – whatever and however the attendees like to write. 

“I always make space for people to share their writing, although there’s never any pressure, and ultimately they become brave spaces for people to connect with each other and be creative.

“I know how hard it can be to motivate  yourself to write, and how daunting it can be to call yourself a “writer”. That’s why I love Write Club – it brings us together in a supportive community of writers. That, and it’s always a really good laugh!” 

The first session of Write Club is on Monday, 15 June and runs from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at Christ Church in Armley.
