Armley Community Hub and Library is set to host a one-of-a-kind exhibition of paper bag portraits by Armley musician, poet and artist Mik Artistik.
The exhibition, bringing together a selection of these distinctive artworks, is entitled ‘Bags of Life’ and will run at the library from 15 June until 10 July.
Besides performing at shows and festivals up and down the country with his band Ego Trip, Mik has been creating his unique portraits on brown paper bags since the 1980s.
As Mik said: “Back in January 1983, I drew my first paper bag portrait. I spotted these big brown bags on a bread shop counter and fell in love with them – their strength and their warmth. I decided everyone needed their own paper bag portrait, and I’d be the one to provide it.”
As part of the exhibition, there will also be a free event at Armley Library on 1 July from 5.30pm-6.45pm with Mik Artistik revisiting his career drawing people in biro on brown paper bags. He will be showing his bag portraits and talking about some amazing encounters.
