Learning how to make vegan cakes at Hollybush.

Staff and volunteers at the Hollybush Café were treated to a hands on vegan baking workshop with Elly Robinson from Leeds-based independent vegan bakery, That Old Chestnut.

The café is based at TCV’s Hollybush Conservation Centre on Broad Lane in Kirkstall and has built up a reputation for its delicious home-made cakes at reasonable prices.

“With more people becoming vegan, we wanted to expand our range of vegan bakes to offer more variety” explained Paul, who has been working in the café since starting as a volunteer over a year ago and progressing to a paid role, now helping to run the café.

The workshop explored tips and techniques to produce fantastic bakes that were an instant hit with customers.  One trainee baker added: “I didn’t expect vegan cakes to taste this good – they were delicious.”

That Old Chestnut is a micro bakery that makes creative quality cakes that are 100% plant based and specialises in special occasion cakes.

Hollybush café is open to the public Wednesday to Friday and Sundays until December from 10.30am to 3pm. Visitors are welcome to explore the gardens and woodland and find out about the volunteering opportunities and courses on offer. Dogs, muddy boots and pushchairs welcome.
