Tributes paid to former Leeds West MP Michael Meadowcroft

Tributes have been paid to former Leeds West MP Michael Meadowcraft, who died yesterday, aged 84.

Mr Meadowcroft’s family yesterday announced his passing, which followed a short illness. He was a former Liberal MP for Leeds West from 1983 to 1987, and was a respected alderman, journalist and political affairs consultant.

Former Leeds West Labour MP John Battle paid tribute to the man he succeeded in 1987. Sir John said: “I was sad to learn of the death of Michael after decades of dedicated political commitment locally as a Leeds city councillor as an MP and then as a practical international advocate for negotiations, justice and peace.

“Michael held to his political views with personal integrity and in our times of dire political polarisation managed to disagree honestly and with integrity. It’s a way of doing politics we all need to relearn.

“May he rest in peace and be well remembered.”

Posting on social media, Leeds West and Pudsey MP and Chancellor Rachel Reeves added: “Thinking of Michael’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed by the local community.”

In recent years Mr Meadowcroft, who lived in Bramley, was chairman of the TV Harrison Sports Ground Association in Wortley, successfully leading the campaign to save the historic sports pitch for becoming a housing development and negotiating with Leeds United over the club buying the land.

Posting on social media, the Association’s Lea Westerman said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that our Chairman, Michael Meadowcroft, passed away this morning after a short illness.

“Michael dedicated so much of his time, energy, and passion to our community, and his contribution to saving ‘Wortley Wembley’ was truly remarkable. His commitment, leadership, and determination helped secure the future of a place that means so much to so many people.

“Michael will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Thank you, Michael, for everything you did for ‘Wortley Wembley’. Your legacy will never be forgotten.”

Leeds Civic Trust’s Martin Hamilton, Noel Whelan, Paul Reaney, Stuart McCall, Mark Sewards MP and Michael Meadowcroft with the blue plaque erected at the TV Harrison ground in 2025.

Leeds South West and Morley MP Mark Sewards (Lab) wrote on social media: “I lost count of the number of conversations I had with Michael over the last four years on the TV Harrison issue. He was a dedicated public servant and community campaigner to the last. I’m so pleased that he and the group were able to achieve their ultimate objective and save the ground.

“I lost count of the number of conversations I had with Michael over the last four years on this issue. He was a dedicated public servant and community campaigner to the last. I’m so pleased that he and the group were able to achieve their ultimate objective and save the ground. May he rest in peace.”

Leeds Civic Trust director and CEO Martin Hamilton also paid tribute. He told WLD: “The most recent project we worked on was the TV Harrison campaign, which Michael had a major involvement in securing the ground’s future. The issue gave him the chance to combine his love of history and little-known stories, along with his activism. Securing a blue plaque for the site combined both those strengths.”

Mr Meadowcroft also delivered talks on local history to trust members and Mr Hamilton also highlighted his work publishing local history books with his wife Elizabeth under their Beecroft Publications banner.

Honorary Alderman Richard Brett was the joint council leader for the Liberal Democrats between 2007 and 2010. He told WLD: “Michael started the revival of Liberalism in Leeds. He was radical and challenging with his principled ideas.

“He remained good company until his final illness. He will be much missed by many who disagreed with him as well as those who took his side. When I was leader, I appreciated his advice and support.”

Bramley & Stanningley Labour councillor Tom Hinchcliffe added: “I wasn’t around when Michael was our MP but he often came to Bramley Forum to speak with us about local issues in the community he cared about. Thoughts are with Elizabeth, his family and friends.”

And Cllr Kevin Ritchie (Lab, Bramley & Stanningley) added: “Very sorry to see this sad news. Michael was a passionate, dedicated public servant, including beyond his political office. A thoroughly lovely man too, who I always enjoyed chatting with. My sincere condolences to Michael’s family.”

Mr Meadowcroft was a member of the Leeds branch of the National Union of Journalists, having written for publications including The Guardian, Yorkshire Post and West Leeds Dispatch.

An article on the Leeds NUJ website today paid tribute to him. It said: “Within the NUJ, Michael spent a time as branch secretary in the 1990s and made sure that Leeds Other Paper had access to agendas and other documents when Leeds Council tried to exclude the title from its proceedings.

“More recently, he was a frequent informal adviser, making political introductions to support the union’s legislative campaigning.”

Posting on the independent Liberal Democrat Voice website, commenter Daniel Walker said: “Michael was a huge influence on me when I joined the party in 2016, and was a very smart chap who know how to articulate Liberalism in a manner from which many in the party could take lessons. The party, and indeed Leeds, will be the poorer for his passing.”

Steve Comer added: “Very sad news. Michael was someone who had a both clear understanding of how Liberalism should adopt to the late 20th century, and the ability to be a strong campaigner for his community in Leeds.”

A biography by Mark Smulian described Mr Meadowcroft as “the main, indeed very nearly the only, philosopher of applied Liberalism within the old Liberal Party from the late 1960s onwards”.

Michael Meadowcroft, born 6 March 1942, died 1 June 2026 is survived by his wife, two children, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his brother. His memory now rests alongside his brother and grandchild who passed away before him.
