Scarborough Athletic 3 Farsley Celtic 0
A youthful Farsley Celtic side crashed out of the FA Cup in a second qualifying round replay at a blustery Scarborough Athletic last night.
The game was notable for the debut of 16-year-old striker Ebenezer Ameho, who only last month was picking up his GCSE results from Farnley Academy. He started as part of a front three with 17-year-old Joao Felix and was later joined by fellow Emerging Talent Squad players Will Morrisey and Tom Priestley-Standing.
Conor Branson, Rudy Misambo and player/manager Clayton Donaldson all sat out of the 3-0 loss with knocks. Lewis Turner is also likely to be out for the season and Jack Leckie has a foot injury.
A brace from Lewis Maloney – including a stunning free-kick just before half time – as well as a goal from Alex Wiles were enough to seal Scarborough’s place in the next round.
The first half was a tight affair with the home side having the better of play without creating a great deal until the influential Maloney’s 25-yard free kick was rifled into the top corner past a despairing Leban in the Farsley goal on 42 minutes.
In truth, the shot-shy Celts were restricted to half chances and aside from a Harry Sheridan header which went narrowly wide with 20 minutes to go, never really looked like getting on the scoresheet.
Just four minutes after the Sheridan chance, Jordan Carroll was sent off for a second bookable offence. Moments later, the Celts were 2-0 down when Alex Wiles struck to give Donaldson’s side a mountain to climb.
The lead was then extended with ten minutes left when Maloney secured his brace with a well-hit shot from outside of the area to make it 3-0.
Farsley will be left to rue a dominant first half display and missed chances in the 1-1 draw at The Citadel which arguably could have sealed the tie by 3.45pm last Saturday.
The Celts now turning their attention back towards the National League North as they welcome Banbury United to The Citadel on Saturday, 23 September.
