Pudsey residents are rallying around staff affected by an armed robbery at the Sainsbury’s Local store.

Robbers attacked one man, threatened another at knifepoint and left another badly shaken following an armed robbery at the Chapeltown store on Friday evening.

Pudsey resident Elizabeth Edgington has set up a crowdfunding page to raise £900 to support the ‘lovely’ staff following the incident. More than £620 has been raised so far.

She wrote:

“The staff in Sainsburys are great, Bip is a friend to so many of us in Pudsey, always has a cheery word and makes our community a better place, and I can’t imagine how terrifying it was to be threatened with a knife or see your colleagues attacked…

“Let’s club together and give them a present that they can use for a treat from us all.”

One of the supporters, Jan Wilcock, wrote:

“I don’t go in often, as it’s not my local store, but whenever I do always a warm welcome from the chap (Bip) so sorry to hear about what happened – well done Pudsey folks for this.”

Suzie Welsh added:

“Wishing you all a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing you all with smiles on your faces again soon xx”

The robbers left empty-handed as staff working at the time did not have a key to the safe. Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident.

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you’re not a registered charity.
