A public defibrillator at Fulneck Golf Course in Pudsey is fully operational again after a replacement battery was fitted.
Councillor Simon Seary (Cons, Pudsey) confirmed the update on Facebook, saying the work was completed on Monday evening (29 December) and the unit has now been returned to service.
The defibrillator forms part of the Pudsey Carnival Defibrillator Project, a community-led initiative that provides and maintains 28 publicly accessible automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) across Pudsey and the surrounding area to improve access to emergency equipment in public spaces.
Public access defibrillators are portable electronic devices used when someone has suffered a cardiac arrest, where the heart suddenly stops pumping effectively.
The device can assess the heart’s rhythm and, if needed, deliver an electrical shock to help restart it as well as guide a responder through first aid.Â
Yorkshire Ambulance Service says there are more than 7,700 registered defibrillators in the region, with call handlers directing people to a nearby device around 1,700 times a month. According to Resuscitation Council UK, survival rates after a cardiac arrest improve between 50-70% when an AED is used within the first three to five minutes.
