West Leeds-based The Invisible Pain Theatre Company has been nominated for Compassionate City Award by Leeds City Council, in recognition of their support to people in the community who are struggling with mental health issues.

The company is based in Swinnow and Pudsey and was established by director Gerica McMullen to offer professional drama lessons to children and adults who may be suffering from mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, social anxiety etc.

Despite the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic, the group continued to meet online every week on Zoom and support its members, but physical rehearsals recommenced last Monday in Pudsey (albeit with social distancing regulations and a smaller group).

The Compassionate City Awards is held every year to recognise the work of the city’s “unsung heroes” in the community.

Gerica said:

“I am so proud and happy our work is appreciated and noticed. This nomination has uplifted the entire group and encourages us to keep reaching out and help those struggling with mental health.

“In these unprecedented times, the need for understanding and support is bigger than ever!”
