A further full closure of Newlay Bridge is needed for two days next week after complications arose with the current maintenance work.
The Grade ll* listed bridge over the River Aire between Pollard Lane in Bramley and Newlay Lane was due to have waterproofing work carried out on it this week.
But workers discovered issues with the concrete on the bridge deck which needed repairing.
As a result the team is now applying a new deck surface, to be followed by the waterproofing element which will require a full closure on Friday 31 August and Saturday 1 September.
The work is weather-dependent as it needs dry weather, so it may need additional time if there is any rainfall.
During the full closure a diversion route will be in place via Victoria Gardens, the A65, the A6120, Rodley Lane, Leeds and Bradford Road and Pollard Lane.
Aside from these dates, the bridge remains open for pedestrians and cyclists to cross, with cyclists being asked to dismount first.
Built by John Polland in 1819, Newlay Bridge will celebrate its bi-centennial anniversary in March next year. Featuring arched cast iron ribs and bracings, it is considered one of the oldest iron bridges in Yorkshire.
The project, which also includes cleaning the stone decking and reinstating the existing stone setts on the surface, will preserve the bridge from corrosion and is expected to be completed by mid-October.
