The owners of a general store off Tong Road have applied for a 24-hour licence to sell alcohol – and councillors will decide whether to approve the application early next month.
Carpatica 2 is based in New Wortley and in November 2023 received a licence to sell alcohol from Sunday to Thursday 8am to 11pm and Friday and Saturday 8am to midnight.
in its latest application, the owners say a night hatch would be installed for the sale of all goods between 11pm and 7am and no customers will be allowed access to the shop premises between those times.
Both West Yorkshire Police and the council’s Environmental Protection Team have objected to the proposals. Two Armley councillors and two members of the public have also objected amid concerns over the prevention of public nuisance and the prevention of crime and disorder.
Councillors sitting on the licensing sub-committee will decide the application at a meeting at Leeds Civic Hall on Tuesday 7 January, at 10am.
The documents to be considered by members of the licensing sub-committee can be read in full here.
Been able to provide booze, via a hatch, at 4am on Tuesday morning is no real asset for the community – in fact it will be a real harm. This is not needed.
Providing a night hatch after 11pm at night for the sale of alcohol, in my opinion, is not a public service.
It seems to me, to be a means of fuelling anti-social behaviour and profits for the owners of the store.
Not at all serving the best interests of the community, who are trying to have a peaceful night’s sleep.
West Yorkshire Police have objected. The council’s Environment Protection Team have objected. Lets hope the licensing sub-committee see sense and refuse this unnecessary application.
This is a preposterous recommendation and should be immediately quashed. We don’t need another 24 hour booze shop, thank you very much, Mr. Akram and Mrs Rand.
