New Wortley Community Centre threw open its doors for their first Spring Open Evening under a glorious sunny sky, unveiling the eagerly-awaited Recycled Reading Room!
The festivities kicked off with Ascendance busting some moves, setting the groove for the evening.
Then came the enchanting Michelle Scally-Clarke, a local author and poet, who not only dazzled with an inspiring speech but also snipped the ribbon for The Recycled Reading Room.

This literary haven offers free membership where you can lend books and cosy up in a nook for a few chapters. Plus, they have Story Sacks you can loan to enjoy with your children.
The sensational Armley Roadblock revved up their smoothie bike—a build-it-yourself kit that budding engineers couldn’t resist. Over 50 smoothies later, both the young and young-at-heart were whizzing on the bike with delight!

Becki, the mastermind behind the event, said: “This was the first project that I have managed, and I’m over the moon it went off without a hitch and drew such a crowd!
“Watching local kids laughing and everyone soaking up the fun was a treat. Huge shoutout to Armley Roadblock for rolling in with the Smoothie Bike—it was a smash hit!
“Massive thanks to the fabulous Michelle for gracing us with her presence and kicking off our Recycled Reading Room. To my amazing colleagues and volunteers, you’re absolute legends for pulling together and making it an unforgettable evening!”

The evening was a grand showcase of everything New Wortley Community Centre has up its sleeves, and did they ever deliver!
From spaces for the Women’s Group, Writing Group (who spun some poetic magic), and Knitting & Crochet, to History Group, The Centre for Warmth, Youth Space, Stay and Play, Arts and Crafts, Book Club, The Pantry, and a sizzling BBQ with green-thumbed gardeners in the mix! They even tossed in a tombola, a raffle, free bites from the new summer menu, and had Fever FM in the house to chat with the community. By the end, everyone left with smiles as wide as the sunset.
