MHA Horsforth ladies’ crafty creations for VE Day

By Jill Stocks

MHA Communities Horsforth members have been busy with their knitting needles creating some special VE Day figures.

Carol Shaw and Susan Procter have been busy for some weeks knitting wartime figures for VE Day. They have created miniature woollen soldiers, airmen and sailors, as well as some planes which are a focal point of the VE Day events for MHA Communities Horsforth at the Central Methodist Church on Town Street.

Carol Shaw has been knitting since she was six years old.

She said: “I was asked to knit some aeroplanes to go with the people. I found a facebook page and asked ‘can anyone help me with a pattern for the planes?’. The first message I got back was a link to these planes. I had to think outside the box [with the type of stitching] and do it as I thought and it turned out alright.

“Knitting helps me. There’s a lot of memories in the house where I live and it takes my mind off those memories.

“If I get it finished I’m trying to do a Lancaster bomber for the top. I think that’s what l’ll be doing for the rest of the day now.”

Jane Morrison, community coordinator for MHA Communities Horsforth, told us about the work her mum Susan Procter has put into creating the miniature military figures.

“They’re very fiddly,” she said. “Some people on facebook are asking how much and are they for sale. She’s knitted each individual bit and attached it all individually so it’s taken her a couple of months just to do these little ones.”

Meanwhile three MHA members visited St Margaret’s Primary School on Tuesday where they spoke to year six pupils about their experiences of wartime.

Phyllis Butterworth, Debbie Evans and Pat Green were primary school age when World War Two began and told the pupils about blackouts, rationing and being an evacuee.

Tomorrow MHA Communities Horsforth will be holding a VE Day special of their Thursday Lunch Club between 10.30am and 12.30pm at Central Methodist Church where you can enjoy homemade corned beef hash and jelly and ice cream as well as their normal menu and watch live VE Day events on the big screen.

MHA Communities Horsforth have a wide variety of activities for over 55’s aimed at tackling social isolation and loneliness, including Craft and Chat on Tuesdays.

You can find more activities from MHA Communities Horsforth at Central Methodist Church and elsewhere in Horsforth in our what’s on section.
