Marsden Court residents enjoy the best bottomless breakfast in Farsley

By Diane Sullivan

Butties & Brews is a weekly breakfast club for residents of Marsden Court Sheltered Housing accommodation in Farsley.

Lainey Mullan, community co-ordinator at MHA Communities, started the popular club in January.

“We wanted to bring something to the residents in the comfort and safety of their own
home,” Lainey said. “Not all residents can get out to attend other things and sharing a meal with others can make such a difference.”

With a handful of residents to start with, word quickly spread and numbers grew to nearer 20.

Recently awarded a five-star Food Hygiene rating, Lainey describes the Friday breakfast club as offering “the best bottomless breakfast” in Farsley.

Residents can enjoy a full English breakfast or a light bite and limitless hot drinks between 9.30am and 11am.

The breakfasts, which receive lots of compliments are made by volunteer chef Joanne Crosthwaite.

Joanne and Lainey told WLD that they have been best friends since they were teenagers and they now enjoy each other’s company in the kitchen.

Friends Mary Carnelly, Jacqueline Firth and Hilary Sykes look forward to Friday mornings.

Jacqueline said: “It’s nice for someone to cook for you or even just make you a drink, it is
a nice change from doing it yourself.”

Mary recalls how she first became a member of MHA Communities when she joined a keep
fit class.

A friend then mentioned one of the regular lunch clubs which Mary joined and since that time Mary has made lots of new friends has a full diary of activities.

“My daughter says that I have a busier diary than she does,” Mary laughingly said.

Mary is a great advocate for the breakfast club. “It would be lovely for more residents to join us – it’s marvellous what they are doing,” she added.

After breakfast there is time for to have a chat and a catch up before the weekly raffle is
drawn.

This week Hilary was delighted to win a small bottle of wine. “Tonight is bingo and I
am going to enjoy a glass of wine,” Hilary told her friends. She enjoys having breakfast with others – “it is something to look forward to”.

Butties and Brews is one of the MHA Communities events that is based in Marsden Court
specifically for residents.

Other MHA events include a weekly Boogie Balance class and a Meet Up where residents can receive support, information or just have a friendly chat.

MHA Communities provides activities, groups and services for people over 55 in the local
