Mark’s History: Photos show exposed tram tracks on Stanningley Road

Words & photos: Mark Stevenson

Normally when I see old tram lines exposed it is in town. These are on Stanningley Road, near the Church of the Venerable Bede, and have been exposed as part of a £19.66m scheme aimed at improving bus times on the A647 between Leeds and Bradford.

Leeds was the first city to introduce overhead powered electric trams in 1891. Previously to that, they were horse-drawn.

November 1959 was the last time a tram ran in Leeds as the service was discontinued, giving way to the buses.
