Leeds Local elections: Reform aims to become ‘strong opposition’

Ahead of the Leeds City Council elections, WLD is running election comments from the major political parties.

Polling day is Thursday, 7 May and results will be announced the following day.

Here’s what Reform UK’s Darren Stephenson had to say to local democracy reporter Don Mort:

Reform UK hopes to become a “strong opposition” in the city as it seeks to gain council seats in the upcoming elections.

The party pledged to stand up for communities and ensure transparent use of public funds by Leeds City Council.

Reform’s Ryan Taylor said the party was committed to improved housing policies and supporting community sports clubs.

Coun Taylo said: “Reform recognises that taking control of Leeds City Council this year is not possible. However, we have a genuine opportunity to become a strong and effective opposition.

“Our priority is clear. Reform councillors will be visible, accessible and accountable, working directly with residents and standing up for the communities they serve.

“We will challenge under-performance, respond quickly to concerns, and ensure that public funds are spent wisely and transparently for the benefit of Leeds.”

Coun Taylor, who represents Morley South, said Reform would promote civic pride and a “shared sense of identity”.

He said: “Leeds is a city of immense potential, but it needs practical leadership, especially on transport and infrastructure.

“Reform will work tirelessly for everyone who wants to see Leeds succeed and thrive.”
