Lawns Park Primary books £1,000 reading shed cash boost

Primary school pupils in Farnley are celebrating after receiving a cash boost to fund an outdoor reading project.

Lawns Park Primary School applied for £1,000 funding from Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire’s Community Champions scheme, which gives away two monthly donations of up to £1,000 each month.

The school’s cash boost means that a reading shed will be installed at the school, off Chapel Lane, to encourage its pupils to sit and share books with friends.

Headteacher Rebecca Ford said:

“Our pupils are passionate about reading and they said they would like to read outside in their own time.

“Our new reading shed will go on our playground so they can share stories – it will be installed with room to store books, soft furnishings and decorations.

“The pupil school council has organised a ‘book bingo’ event to help raise money for the project, but Persimmon’s kind donation will make sure we reach our target.”

Simon Whalley, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said:

“We are delighted to choose Lawns Park Primary School as our most recent recipient of Community Champions funding.

“Reading is so important and we’re glad to hear that the school’s pupils are passionate about it. We hope their new reading shed will see even more pupils get enjoyment out of reading.

“Picking our two monthly winners is always a difficult task, but we would encourage any good cause from across West Yorkshire to get in touch with an application.”

The Persimmon Homes Community Champions initiative invites groups and charities who have already worked hard to raise money themselves to apply for match-funding of up to £1,000 by completing an online form.
