As I write this, it’s almost the longest day of the year, the summer solstice. It’s traditional to have almost all your veg crops planted by solstice, and we always aim for that.
All of the crops we eat over summer (like cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes, chard) have been in the ground for a couple of months now, and have enjoyed the mixture of rain and sun we’ve had this spring.
We’ve just planted all the pumpkins and winter brassicas (think cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli) that we’ll eat through the winter and next spring. Soon we will plant all our leeks, and then take a break from planting until the autumn! Lots of weeding to do before then!

Spring has seen lots of new people join our volunteer sessions. We learn something new from everyone as we chat whilst we work together. Everyone is always welcome to join us and we have so many different jobs – you don’t need to have done any gardening before, or be really physically fit – we’ve always got a job for you!
It’s great to see the farm busy with people coming to allotments, the sauna and all the kids groups. Special shout out to our colleagues in the Children and Families team, who were shortlisted for a Child Friendly Leeds Award this year for all their amazing work.
Join us on Saturday, 4th of July for the farmās annual birthday party. It’s always a good time, with activities for kids, local live music, stalls, food and a bar. If you can, pay for your ticket, or book a free one if money is tight. Booking here.
