Kind-hearted staff at Kirkstall’s Specsavers have been doing their bit to help the hearing of homeless people in Leeds.
Working in partnership with St George’s Crypt, they recently held a special ear assessments session at their opticians and hearing centre at Kirkstall Bridge Retail Park.
Homeless people often have undiagnosed and treated issues with loss of hearing, and the session is part of Specsavers’ commitment towards supporting them.

Hearing director at Kirkstall Specsavers, Josh Brough-Ali said: “We know people affected by homelessness are more likely to face serious eye and hearing problems, yet they often encounter major barriers when trying to access care.
“This is the first session we’ve done with St George’s Crypt and we really wanted to give something back to the community and support local people who might need some extra support or who may have an undiagnosed issue.
“It was good to be able to help out. People who are homeless include people in temporary accommodation, young families and young people who are sofa surfing and who have nowhere permanent to live.
“We’re looking forward to doing more of these sessions down the line and supporting more people.”
Support on the day included checking for wax and removal where needed, along with conducting hearing assessments and general support.
As well as running eye and ear care clinics across stores across the UK, Specsavers also collaborates with Crisis, Vision Care, Big Issue and other homelessness services to create long-term solutions to remove healthcare barriers.
Specsavers is here to support anyone who finds that their hearing might be changing.
As well as fitting hearing aids, Specsavers audiologists offer free hearing tests with friendly, qualified professionals to support and guide you where needed. They also run wax triages, where no appointment is necessary.

WLD reported earlier this year how the store donated hi-vis vests to the 7th Airedale (St Margaret’s) Scout Group scout group in Horsforth.
