An opticians and gym in West Leeds are joining forces to fundraise for prostate screenings for men over 40 in the community.
Specsavers Kirkstall is collaborating with PureGym Kirkstall to raise £2,100 – the amount needed to fund 70 PSA tests, which measure a protein in the blood produced by the prostate that can be indicative of prostate cancer. The tests will be provided by Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT).
The fundraising will begin this Monday, 25 May and wrap up on Friday, 29 May. Each day, members of the Specsavers and PureGym teams will be cycling on a spin bike outside the shop.
Other activities to raise funds include cake sales, tombola and a raffle – with the top prize a Specsavers Voucher worth £50.
Jennie Long, ophthalmic director at Specsavers Kirkstall, says:Â “We pride ourselves on raising money and awareness of causes that directly impact the people of West Leeds and beyond.
“This is our first time collaborating with our neighbours at PureGym, who have been a huge supporter of prostate cancer causes over the years. We can’t wait to throw ourselves into this challenge, highlighting the amazing work Graham Fulford Chartiable Trust do and giving it our all to smash our target. To anyone who can spare a donation, no matter how small, we thank you for your contribution.”
Graham Fulford, founder of GFCT, adds: “We’re extremely grateful to Specsavers and PureGym Kirkstall for supporting prostate cancer awareness and helping fund vital PSA testing for local men.
“Around one in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, and many will have no symptoms in the early stages. Community initiatives like this play an important role in encouraging men to check their prostate health and access potentially life-saving testing.”
Once the target has been met, a date will be announced and men hoping to make most of the service can scan a QR code to book in.
PureGym offers free membership to people who have been diagnosed with the cancer themselves.
Sam Moorhouse, gym manager at PureGym Leeds Kirkstall Bridge, added: “We’re delighted to be taking part in a week of fundraising together with Specsavers Kirkstall to raise funds and support prostate cancer screening in the local community.
“We’re very proud of the PureGym Leeds Kirkstall Bridge team for getting involved and helping to raise awareness, both of the importance of prostate cancer screening and the positive impact of exercise. We hope that the local community gets involved and joins us in supporting this very important cause.”
