A community organisation has appealed for volunteers to help water freshly planted trees as the current dry spell continues.
The Environment Agency has warned of the risk of drought this summer without sustained rainfall after the driest start to spring in nearly six decades.
And volunteers from the Friends of Burley Park group are encouraging park users to do their bit by adopting a tree and watering it when they visit.
A spokesperson said: “Many of you will have seen the replacement trees in the park, in fact lots of you helped to plant them and that was brilliant.Â
“That is not the end of the work though, as large trees need watering regularly for the first couple of years of their life, and the very dry spring has made this imperative. A few of us have managed to water so far, but it will be hard for us to manage for the whole summer.
“If you visit the park regularly with your family, or go to walk the dog or collect the children from school, could you ‘adopt a tree’ and water whenever you visi?
“You don’t need to go mad with a whole barrowful, but if anyone can take, for example, a four-pint bottle every day you walk the dog that would be three gallons a week – which would help the tree to thrive.”
If you could help by adopting a tree contact Friends of Burley Park at burleyparkfriends@gmail.com and they will link you to a tree.
