Horsforth: Window works proposed at historic former Baptist church

By George Jenkins

Plans to repair and replace windows and doors at Cherubs Kindergarten, a pre-school in Horsforth, have been submitted to the council.

The requested works would include repairs to 37 windows at the site, on Cragg Hill, with 18 being replaced, and the other 19 being refurbished.

The building, which was formerly a Baptist church, has been a Grade II site on the National Heritage List since 1982, making it a building of special interest. It has operated as a pre-school since 1992, when Cherubs Kindergarten took over the site.

With the building being of special interest, any work on the property must be carefully undertaken, with particular focus on retaining the historic nature of the site. Window frames that are past the point of repair must be replaced with painted Accoya, a stable form of timber with a 50-year warranty.

A heritage statement supporting the planning application said: “The combination of these warranties is a major factor in reducing the maintenance cycle/costs for the building. The use of Accoya also reduces the need for regular maintenance/replacement in this exposed location.

“Where possible, all historic glass that is of significance will be retained in refurbished/replacement windows. We would seek permission to use a slim line double-glazed unit, as these can still be used with thin glazing bars.

“This will then help the building owners reduce their energy bills with an improved thermal performance on the property, and of course help with reducing the carbon footprint.”

Work is set to be completed by David H Wright Joinery.

Comments can be submitted by 3 July.
