A mentorship scheme to support vulnerable children at risk of being involved in crime in West Leeds could receive a council grant.
Organisation On the Verge has applied for £1,500 from the council’s Inner West Community Committee, which meets tomorrow (Tuesday).
In its application, On The Verge says child criminal exploitation is a growing issue where children and young people are targeted by criminals and gangs to engage in criminal activity.
Their application states: “Some of our work will be focused on children with additional needs as they are five times more likely to become involved in crime and are more vulnerable to grooming by gangs and criminals.Â
“Our mentorship programme has proven to be a powerful tool in educating and deterring young people from the grooming process and entering a life of crime and providing the opportunities and pathways needed for change.”
Housing Leeds have also applied for £13,848 for the painting of railings on the Gilbert and Sandford housing estate in Kirkstall ward.
The Inner West Community Committee is made up of nine councillors – eight Labour, one Green – from Armley, Bramley & Stanningley and Kirkstall wards. Community representatives also sit on the committee.
It meets tomorrow (Tuesday, 19 November) at the Eric Atkinson Centre in Bramley, starting at 6pm. The agenda and council papers can be read in full here.
