From Looms to LEGO: A museum reinvented for a new generation

Armley Mills has opened its doors to a playful Easter, while preserving a hard-working past.

Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills is welcoming families this Easter with a programme that blends hands-on creativity, seasonal fun and the living story of the city’s industrial past.

Until 19 April, visitors can join a Felted Egg Hunt, take part in self-led crafts and enjoy the museum’s daily mystery matinees, with activities included in standard admission and designed to suit drop-in visits during the school holidays.

The museum, which still speaks so vividly of textile labour, machinery and invention, remains a place where children and adults alike can move between playful discovery and a deeper sense of local history.

That contrast between present and past is part of the museum’s quiet strength.

In the textile galleries, the old processes of spinning, carding and weaving are brought to life with working machinery and the careful explanations of staff who know how to turn complex industry into something visitors can grasp at once.

The Spinners of Aire group also meets on site on Wednesdays, adding another thread to the museum’s community life and reminding visitors that these skills were once part of everyday Leeds, not simply material for display cases.

For many families, the experience is likely to be as much about atmosphere as education, with the historic setting offering a rare chance to slow down and look closely at the city’s making.
