Friends of Bramley Park welcome new volunteers as walled garden work continues

By Wendy Exley

Friends of Bramley Park is a community group run by volunteers who need more support to help revitalise the walled garden in Bramley Park, off Upper Town Street.

The walled garden provides an enclosed space of calm, where people can sit and chat, enjoy the plants and wildlife and is a place of sanctuary.

Everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun, any age, (children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. No experience is needed, some tools and gloves are provided, or you can bring your own, wear closed toe footwear and comfortable clothing.

Friends of Bramley Park has a core group of committee members, including Councillor Kevin Ritchie (Lab, Bramley & Stanningley) and India Sida-Murray, a local horticulturist, and four active gardeners.

The friendly and welcoming group, which works with Leeds Parks Department, wants to enrich the planting in the walled garden to increase diversity and create wildlife habitats.

If you are interested and could spare an hour or two, the group meet up on certain Saturdays 12pm-3pm, (the next gardening day is planned for 11 July) in the walled garden. Dates are announced on their website and Facebook page.

A plant sale has been arranged for Saturday, 6 June, in Bramley Park at 10am-2pm. Volunteers have been growing and nurturing the plants ready for sale. All funds raised will help to buy more resources and plants for the garden.
