Affordable Easter egg success for Armley charity

By Andrew Dalton

Staff and volunteers at Leeds City Mission have been amazed at the demand for the Real Easter Egg in recent weeks.

An incredible total of 99 Real Easter Eggs were snapped up by visitors and supporters at their Compassion Centre in Mistress Lane, Armley during the easter season.

The City Mission reduced the price of the eggs by 27% and sold them at cost hoping it would provide an affordable way for families to celebrate the easter season.

Produced by the Meaningful Chocolate Company, they are made with Fairtrade chocolate and the purchase price included a donation to charity.

Also included was a free 24-page illustrated book featuring the story of the first Easter. It recounts the final week in the life of Jesus and the events of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday – plus a prize competition worth £200.

Development worker Andy Dalton said that Leeds City Mission was constantly seeking new ways to help hard-pressed people in days of inflation and family budget anxiety.

“Being able to offer an ethical easter egg with a charitable purpose at a price people could afford sat well with the priorities of the Mission,” he said. “It also helped people reflect on the meaning behind the easter season.”

An additional 20 eggs had to be ordered to cope with the demand.  Local people were amongst the visitors requesting these Real Easter Eggs having read an article on the project in the columns of the West Leeds Dispatch in mid March.

“A big thank you to every visitor to our Compassion Centre who came and bought a Real Easter Egg in recent weeks,” added Mr Dalton. “People have enjoyed good chocolate, assisted poor cocoa farmers in West Africa make a living and also helped charities in their work.”

Leeds City Mission is a multi-church Christian agency which has worked with marginalised people over three centuries seeks to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of Leeds residents.  It is one of the city’ s oldest charities being in continuous existence since 1837.
