Community centre recognised for volunteering excellence

By Rebecca Hunter

Volunteers at New Wortley Community Centre are delighted they have achieved the VAL Quality Mark Level 1 for “excellence in volunteering”.

They were able to demonstrate a “high standard of volunteering practice” within their processes, induction, training and general investment in their volunteers.

The achievement is thanks to the work of Volunteer Coordinator Rachel Arnold and her team of over 20 volunteers.

Daniel volunteers with the food pantry.

Long-time volunteer Daniel enjoys working in the pantry, finding it beneficial for his maths skills, while helping customers and packing their bags. He appreciates being part of the team and has gained confidence through volunteering.

Magdalene volunteered to give back after experiencing kindness upon arriving in the UK. Volunteering has helped her feel welcomed, grow in confidence, and connect with others, making her feel part of the community. She is happy to be a volunteer.

Lesley helps out in reception.

Lesley expressed a desire to volunteer to learn new skills and meet people. Initially nervous while helping at reception, she is gaining experience and developing her listening skills.

She discovered the value of simply being there for others and is growing in confidence by learning from her mistakes, which has boosted her self-belief.
