A Leeds based church could open in part of a former blinds and curtains shop off Tong Road, in Upper Wortley.
Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Power Connections has submitted a planning application to Leeds City Council to change the use of the building to a place of worship.
External alterations are limited to new windows, and the application states the ground floor will include a reception/lounge, teenagers’ meeting space, toilets, kitchen and five children’s classrooms.
The first floor would include a platform and church hall, four offices, toilets and a nursing mothers’ room. It would be accessible via stairs and a disabled lift.
The existing church congregation comprises around 200 members.
A planning statement accompanying the application states: “At their current location [in Meanwood], no more than 30 cars park at the site for a Sunday service. The church operates three minibuses that transport members to and from the site.
“A large section of the congregation comprises university students and young adults who do not drive. The remaining members of the congregation who do not arrive in a car or via the church-operated minibus will travel via sustainable travel options, such as walking or via public transport.”
It says parking will be accommodated within the existing on-site car park.
The plans can be viewed in full – and commented upon – here.
RCCG is a global Pentecostal church founded in 1952 by Pastor Josiah Akindayomi in Nigeria.

Can’t wait for the church to move to this area. Finally, this locality is getting a place of worship and a youth center. Super excited
I ‘m looking forward to a more spacious building which can accommodate more members, especially those that alternate coming to church on Sunday because of the space of the present place of worship ( on Meanwood road ). Also to some that join online who may want to be onsite and to the community a new face of a community church that welcomes everyone.
This is very spacious venue we are looking forward to moving to. Our presence here will add to the multicultural experience of the community. We bring together all people both young and old to enjoy the love of God. Can’t wait.
Waste of space there are enough churches in the area hardly used.
There will be issues with the parking only enough space for around 6 cars
This is opposite a bus lane so if people park on road there will a lot of congestion just after Whingate lights.
