Calverley Community Centre and Library officially opened

By Anne Akers

Calverley’s newly-refurbished library and community centre was officially opened by Councillor Asghar Khan, Executive Member for Communities, Customer Services and Community Safety.

Members of local groups who meet at the centre, along with library users and local councillors attended the opening on Wednesday.

The community hub for the village has been created in the Mechanics Institute, following the sale of the library building earlier this year as part of the council’s cost-saving measures.

The library and children’s library now have separate rooms in the building on the ground floor, with the hall upstairs available for group meetings and events. The hub offers free wi-fi and use of computers, and access to printers and other customer services.

The children’s library has already proved popular with the Wednesday morning story time attracting dozens of children.

Groups meeting at the library and community centre include the Knitwits knitting and social group, reading group, Mind Matters social group for adults, as well as the indoor bowling club, whist club and local history group.

Calverley Library is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9-5 and Saturdays 10-1.

Cutting the celebration cake, Councillors Andrew Carter, Asghar Khan, Peter Carlill, Jane Dowson and Craig Timmins.
