Horsforth Woodside Bowling Club is inviting people to give crown green bowling a go this spring, with free, friendly taster sessions designed for complete beginners as well as anyone returning to the sport.
Crown green bowling has a proud history across the north of England, and Horsforth Woodside, now more than 100 years old, still brings together players of all ages.
Members range from teenagers to retirees, including one of the club’s longest-serving players, who has been a member for more than 50 years, proof that the game’s appeal hasn’t faded.

Bowling also has recognised physical and mental health benefits, including helping to improve flexibility and balance.
With the green tucked away from the main road in a secluded spot, it’s easy to see the appeal of playing an end in the spring sunshine!
Chairman Graham Hey said the joy of the game is as much about community as competition – and he’s keen to see bowling keep its place at the heart of Horsforth. Newcomers are welcome to drop in on Saturdays (10.30am–12pm) to have a try, and members new and old can practice on Monday evenings.
“It’s like being part of a big family,” Graham said. “We’ve currently got around 20 members, but we’d love to grow. The more members we have, the more bowling we can do, and the more enjoyment there is.”
The club attracts plenty of local players, but bowlers also travel from further afield to test themselves on Woodside’s well-kept, yet deceptively tricky green. For those who are looking for a bit more of a challenge, the club is in the Airedale & Wharfedale League, as well as taking part in regular friendlies.

Jim Whittle, 55, has recently taken up regular bowling again with Horsforth Woodside. He first played as a child, but then focused on other sports, until driving past the club on Low Lane reminded him how much he’d previously enjoyed it.
“I enjoy competitive sport, but I’m not keen on football or running now, too many injuries,” he said.
“Passing Woodside brought it all back. Since then I’ve played for a few clubs, but I’m pleased to be back here. As well as the game, I love the social side, you meet people of all ages. It’s very welcoming.”
Anyone curious is encouraged to come along on a Saturday morning, have a go, and see why the sport has stood the test of time, no experience needed.
Horsforth Woodside Bowling Club is on Low Lane (next to Miller & Carter). More details can be found here or by calling 07741 927907.
