Bramley chef runs London Marathon to thank sight loss charity

West Leeds chef Caroline Burton is running the TCS London Marathon, returning on Sunday 27 April, in aid of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Caroline, 42, from Leeds has joined Team RNIB after running the London Marathon in aid of the charity eight years ago when she was first registered as partially sighted.

Caroline has since regained her sight and is keen to run again to give back to RNIB, who supported her on her sight loss journey.

She will be running to help the charity’s mission to build an inclusive world for blind and partially sighted people and to raise awareness of the challenges people with sight loss face every day.

Caroline had detached retinas in both of her eyes, which led to her being registered as partially sighted after undergoing several eye surgeries.

Caroline said: “I always said I would love to do the London Marathon again. Last time, and somehow between surgeries, I managed to train and conquer the marathon all on my own. I’m excited to be doing it again.”

Formerly an HR Professional, Caroline was made redundant and trained as a chef. Shortly after, she opened The Kitchen at Haley’s Yard, Bramley, a food delivery service offering restaurant-quality food to customers in the comfort of their own homes.

Caroline says many of her customers are disabled who enjoy the familiarity of being at home with quality takeaway.

She added: “When I was training at chef school, I used a lot of RNIB’s accessible cooking tools such as the ‘talking kitchen scale with easy-to-see jug’ and the LED light. It was so helpful to have these accessible options during my training.”

Caroline will be hosting a charity raffle to help boost her funds for RNIB. To sponsor Caroline and support RNIB, please donate here.

Chris Perrin, RNIB’s Head of Supporter Led Fundraising, said: “Running a marathon is undoubtedly a huge challenge for anyone so we are very grateful to have Caroline join Team RNIB this year for the TCS London Marathon. The funds raised will help the charity support the estimated two million people living with sight loss in the UK.”
