Bramley Baths is inviting people from across West Leeds to dive into its past, present and future as part of Leeds 400, the city-wide programme marking 400 years since Leeds received its first Royal Charter.
On Saturday, 25 July, the historic Edwardian bathhouse will open its doors for a day of heritage, arts, culture and wellbeing activities celebrating its unique place in the story of the city.
The programme will celebrate Bramley Baths’ role in Leeds life through a mix of activities, from dance classes and heritage-inspired photography workshops to a Floating Soundbath.
There will also be a special performance by the Bramley Mermaids, reflecting the spirit of the times when the Baths were known across Leeds not only as a place to swim and wash, but also as a much-loved venue for dance, music and community gatherings.
Bramley Baths hopes to welcome 400 people throughout the day, echoing the Leeds 400 theme and demonstrating how the baths continue to serve as a friendly, inclusive community hub where everyone is welcome.
The activities also form part of Bramley Baths’ current #MoreThanAPool project, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which is helping the Baths share its heritage with new audiences while planning for a sustainable future.
Heritage Engagement Manager at Bramley Baths, Helen Whiteley, said: “We want to bring Leeds 400 out to the suburbs and showcase Bramley Baths as an important heritage site.
“As the last of eight Edwardian bathhouses built in Leeds, Bramley is unique. As well as being full of beautiful original features, it is still delivering what it set out to do when it opened in 1904 – serving local people in so many ways.
“The Baths have been in almost continuous use since day one and, thanks to National Lottery players and the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are looking ahead to an exciting future where we continue to serve future generations in new and innovative ways while celebrating the Baths’ vibrant heritage and important role in Leeds’s story.”
Investment in #MoreThanAPool from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, is enabling Bramley Baths to explore the untapped potential of its heritage, protect and restore the building, and support long-term service delivery and development.
A development grant of £639,375 from the Heritage Fund was awarded in June 2025 for the first phase of a £4.1 million project. This phase is exploring initial work to restore and protect the unique heritage building, attract new audiences to the Baths through heritage, arts, culture and wellbeing activities, and ensure its vital services are sustained for the long-term future.
