Armley Eye captures community in photos – launch event announced

Armley residents are being invited to the official launch of a new one-off newspaper capturing the people of Armley.

Long-term Armley resident Dan Commons has created the Armley Eye as a photo document for his PhD research on collaborative/participatory photographic practices in documenting place.

The publication is dedicated to much-loved Armley icon Fudge, the horse who lived and grazed on Armley Moor for many years until his passing in September 2024.

Dan said: “The Armley Eye mixes archival materials with contemporary photographs to reflect how the history of Armley still resonates in the physical environment, which is an important characteristic of the present identity of Armley and its community.”

Dan, who has used film and disposable cameras to capture his photos, is holding a launch event on Tuesday, 25 November, 6pm to 8pm at Christ Church.

Papers will be distributed on the night and he will be creating a backdrop where people can take self or family portraits.

Copies of the Armley Eye will be available to collect at pick up points across Armley.
