Why Calverley’s ‘in bloom’ for winter

After retaining its ‘In Bloom’ gold award this summer, Calverley is getting ready for winter with volunteers planting troughs and planters which should flower until the spring, writes Anne Akers.

The troughs are on Towngate and Carr Road, with children from Calverley C of E School picking up new gardening skills by helping with the planters outside the Gatescroft allotments.

The volunteers have also built a small garden on the corner of Calverley Lane and Rodley Lane with stone and plants donated by local people.

Bev Smith, one of the volunteers and a member of the In Bloom committee, said the team of volunteers had worked hard to retain the gold award.

“We are always happy to more volunteers, especially when it comes to planting time,” she said. “Just get in touch with in via our Facebook page.”
