West Leeds 52-0 Barnsley
Things are not always what they seem and this report shows this to be true, writes Glenn Broadbent.
West Leeds had a makeshift front row and key players with niggles rested in preparation for next weeks national cup semi- final at Oundle still overcame an aggressive Barnsley side.
The game was all but over in 19 minutes with four tries and two conversions securing the bonus point and taking the score to 24-0.
On the 25th minute Barnsley made their first foray into the home sides half and stayed there for five minutes but never really threated to score.
An eventual error saw Wests breakaway on the 31st minute to score a converted try 31-0 and that’s how it stayed until half time.
Barnsley started the second half in better form, focusing for a short time on the ball and the game of rugby.
Technical offences saw Kirk and Carpenter in the sin bin within seven minutes of each other leaving West Leeds down to 13 men for three minutes.
Despite this Barnsley failed to get over the line. However, Wests did score a converted try 38-0.
West Leeds missed a penalty on 62 minutes but scored again on 70 and 72 minutes taking the full time score to 52-0.
A workmanlike display with some intimidating challenges moved West Leeds a step closer to this season’s target, but nothing is taken for granted and the players remain focused on next week’s trip to Cambridgeshire.
