Pudsey Conservative MP Stuart Andrew today announced he is backing former chancellor Rishi Sunak as the new Prime Minister.

Sunak is currently leading the race to become the UK’s next prime minister as Conservative MPs declare who they are supporting.

Pudsey MP Andrew announced his preferred candidate via social media today: “Having given this a lot of thought and taken on the views of many constituents over the last few days, I have decided to support Rishi Sunak in the leadership election. A detailed focus on the economy is needed, and he has that experience.”

Earlier this week Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister after 44 days. Her position became untenable after economic policies announced by her government in its mini-budget caused market turmoil. Other frontrunners include former PM Boris Johnson and Penny Mordaunt.

In a tweet formally announcing his candidacy, Mr Sunak said the UK faces “a profound economic crisis”, adding: “The choice our party makes now will decide whether the next generation of British people will have more opportunities than the last.

“That’s why I am standing to be your next prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party. I want to fix our economy, unite our party and deliver for our country.”

At the time of writing, the BBC’s tally of public declarations of support currently has 144 MPs for Sunak, 56 for Johnson and 23 for Penny Mordaunt – candidates need 100 by Monday
