Principal aims for Dixons Unity Academy to be ‘more than just a school’

By Harry Crossland, student, Dixons Unity Academy

“It doesn’t matter your origin, past, or barriers, we’ll do our best to support you to get to
university or a real alternative.”

This is the message conveyed by Dixons Unity Academy Principal Mr Ashley Jacobs, when asked about his current vision for the school.

Dixons Unity Principal. Ashley Jacobs.

Mr Jacobs outlined his hope for the academy; that outcomes for students are just as good or better than any other school in the country, irrespective of factors like background or economic position.

He also discussed his want for the school to attract local children and the best teachers in Leeds to contribute to the environment of productivity and progress.

Jacobs wants DUA to become a strongly established face in the local community;
‘more than just a school’.

Compared to when Mr Jacobs joined the school three years ago, staff turnover has
plummeted, and the school now has a more stable staff team who have better
relationships with students.

The school environment is also significantly calmer, with an extreme decrease in truancy, and now offers more opportunities outside of the classroom for extracurricular activities than ever before.

Over the next three years, Mr Jacobs hopes that the school will achieve outstanding
results for all students, regardless of their barriers to education, and that such success
will continue across all areas of the school.

The Dixons Dispatch [school newspaper] also spoke to Mr Jacobs about Dixons Unity Academy’s support provision: Connect.

Since its opening, grades for students in Connect have increased by 300% due to the greater support and inclusion in the DUA community.

With places available in all year groups, Dixons Unity Academy invites you to join and benefit from hard-working, caring staff (Mr Jacobs says more so than any other
school!), where help is always available.

Jacobs also presented a special message for any students joining in year 10 or 11: “It doesn’t matter your origin, past, or barriers, we’ll do our best to help you get those grades.”
