A community activist is looking to revitalise the Cenotaph in Kirkstall with two projects – and has asked for volunteers to help crochet an impressive poppy display.
Wenzdae Robbins, 24, is looking to put together a giant cape of poppies to sit on the back of the cenotaph to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day in May and August.
She has already recruited a number of volunteers to make poppies for the display.
Wenzdae said: “I wanted to do this as a commemoration of everyone who served and lost their lives in World War Two.
“So far, I’ve had donations from local business of netting for the display, and I have organised passionate residents to come together in a community effort to crochet 2,000 poppies for the display, we’ve made a joint effort of over 300 poppies so far, with more to come. I’ve even got my mum crocheting poppies!”
Wenzdae is also organising a huge poppy display to be done by November for the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2. Her plans include two new stones with poppy capes, alongside other ideas she has for the area.
She added: “I’m also organising the cleaning of the entire cenotaph area, including the cenotaph itself, the stones behind it, and the floor and fencing.
“I’m also currently in communication with the necessary authorities to get the black chain re-instated on the fence at the front of the cenotaph, which over the years had gotten damaged and had been removed about six years ago.”
