A new school could be built at a major new development in west Leeds, a senior councillor has said.
Cllr Lucinda Yeadon (Lab) said the council is in advanced negotiations with Kirkstall Forge developer Commercial Estates Group (CEG) regarding building a new school on the site.
Cllr Yeadon told a community meeting of Kirkstall Forum on Thursday evening that the new school would help tackle a shortage of school places in the area:
“It is a huge development for the city, as well as the ward. As a council we face a big challenge with school places being available and there have been discussions with the developers about putting a new school on the site.
“These discussions are quite far down the road.”
As well as the possibility of a new school, a detailed planning application for a seven-storey office block next to the new Kirkstall Forge Railway Station has been submitted.
The masterplan for the site also includes over 1,000 flats and homes. The new station is due to open in October.
